August 19, 2010 — Image Engineering, one of the leading global companies for the development of measuring processes for digital imaging, has come up with a special highlight for the upcoming photokina 2010. With the help of the first-ever living test chart, visitors to the leading global trade fair for imaging, which will be held from September 21 to 26, can bring along their cameras or camera-equipped cell phones to the Boulevard in the trade fair halls and have them tested free of charge. This attention-getting activity is supported by Koelnmesse as the organizer of photokina and by other sponsors including CHIP Foto Video, Foto Gregor, and the image services provider Viabild.

The way it works is simple and easy: The photokina visitors use their cameras/camera-equipped cell phones to take a picture of the test chart, which measures 2.2 x 3.3 meters. The special feature of the test chart is that it incorporates a live model painted only with test patterns. After that, the data of the images is analyzed on the spot by experienced engineers using the leading software IE-Analyzer from Image Engineering. Thanks to the photokina test chart with a skyline of Cologne, which was specially designed by Image Engineering for this activity, the experts can analyze the resolution, color characteristics, picture quality, and image noise. Every interested photokina visitor can receive a test certificate concerning the current performance of his or her camera after the evaluation has been carried out.

“With this activity we want to not only offer a special highlight to the photokina visitors, but also show photographers the technical capabilities inside their cameras,” said Dietmar Wüller, CEO of Image Engineering, to explain the company’s intention. August 11, 2010 — Professional and amateur photographers around the world were invited to enter The EPSON International Photographic Pano Awards to compete for over ,000 in cash and prizes.

The inaugural 2010 EPSON International Pano Awards is dedicated to the art of panoramic photography. Advances in digital photography and software such as PTGui and Adobe Photoshop has resulted in an explosion in the popularity of image stitching, especially in the panoramic format. Panoramic film photography also remains alive and well.

The inaugural competition was very well supported with 2,740 entries from 945 photographers in 79 countries. The overall winner was Bill Leigh Brewer of California, who also placed first in The Built Environment category of the Open competition.

The winner of the Amateur competition was Cynthia Hedgecock, of San Diego, California, who also placed first in the Nature category. Her image Storm Wave at Sunset was taken with a Canon digital SLR in Kaua’i, Hawaii, on the NaPali Coast – a wild and volcanically formed coastline of cliffs and rainforest, approachable by sea or helicopter, or in part by hiking trails. The wave was formed at high tide, when huge storm waves were pounding the cliffs then surging back out to meet the oncoming waves. This one exploded into the fan formation, with backlighting from the sunset through the blue-green water.

Festival of the Chariots 2010 at Venice Beach – Part 1

This is the first of two videos I am putting up from this year’s Festival of the Chariots, the Hare Krishna Festival, held annually on Venice Beach in Los Angeles. This video is comprised of three separate shots I got during the same singing/chanting session, using my Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Digital Camera. Here we see the band speeds up the rhythm of their music and the dancing becomes more frenetic. It wasn’t as big as Festivals I’ve been to in the past, but I still hope you enjoy this video.
